Iberdrola and Ib Vogt sign deal to develop a 245 MW solar project in Italy

The Spanish energy group Iberdrola has signed an agreement with the German developer IB Vogt to develop a 245 MW solar project in Sicily, Italy. The Fenix solar project expects to start construction in March 2024 and once completed it will generate around 400 GWh with its 424,638 PV modules, enough to supply more than 140,000 households with clean energy and saving a total of 119,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions. The project is set to become the largest photovoltaic project under construction in Italy (average projects have a capacity of 26 MW), and Iberdrola to add a further 60 MW in the future. The total installed capacity of the Fenix project would thus reach 305 MW.

Italy’s solar capacity stood at 25 GW at the end of 2022 (around 21% of total capacity), the power mix being dominated by gas-fired power plants (40%). Iberdrola aims to reach by 2025 an installed capacity of 400 MW in the country.
