Iberdrola aims to postpone closure of Almaraz (2 GW) in Spain

Iberdrola has plans to request to the Spanish government to postpone the closure of the Almaraz nuclear power plant (El Pais, 21/10/2025). The owners of the project (Iberdrola 52.7%, Endesa 36% and Naturgy 11.3%) are preparing a formal request to the Spanish Ministry of Ecological Transition to postpone the closure of Almaraz for at least two years, until 2030

The Almaraz NPP, located at 100 km from Portugal, consists of two units of about 1 GW each that are scheduled for closure in November 2027 and October 2028, respectively.

Spain has a nuclear phaseout program, planning to close its seven operational nuclear power plants (7.1 GW) between 2027 and 2035. Ascó I and Cofrentes are expected to stop operations in 2030, Ascó II in 2032, and Vandellós II in 2035.
