IberBlue will develop a 990 MW floating offshore wind project in Portugal

The renewable energy company IberBlue Wind, a joint venture between the Irish company Simply Blue Group and Spanish companies Proes Consultores, Amper Group, and FF NEV, has announced plans to develop a 990 MW floating offshore wind project off the coast of Figueira da Foz in central Portugal. The Botafogo floating offshore wind project will occupy an area of 359 km2, between 30 and 50 km away from the coast, and will comprise 55 wind turbines with a capacity of 18 MW each. The project is estimated to require and investment of €2.5bn.

Figueira da Foz is one of the five areas proposed by the Portuguese government for offshore renewable energy exploration. Earlier in February 2023, the Danish fund managing company Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) announced that it would invest €8bn in a proposed 2 GW offshore wind project (the Nortada project) also located off Figueira da Foz.

Portugal, which phased out coal-fired generation in 2021, currently generates around 60% of its electricity from renewables (hydropower, wind and solar) and expects to reach 80% before 2030. At the end of 2021, Portugal only had 25 MW of installed offshore wind capacity (but 5.6 GW of onshore wind). The country produced 13.2 TWh from wind in 2021. Portugal also plans to hold its first offshore wind auctions, which will offer 10 GW of capacity, by the end of 2023.
