Hydro-Québec targets up to 9 GW of clean energy by 2035 (Canada)

The Canadian power utility Hydro-Québec has released its “Action Plan 2035: Towards a Decarbonized and Prosperous Québec”, which sets its target to free up and add new assets to their current power generation capacity to meet up to 9 GW needed to supply the increasing demand growth by 2035. Anticipating the need of an additional 150 to 200 TWh electricity production to fulfill electricity demand by 2050, Hydro-Québec aims to add 60 TWh by 2035 and plans to invest around CAD90-110bn (US$65-80bn) by this date, by installing 1.5 to 1.7 GW of wind power generation, 3.8 to 4.2 GW of hydropower, 500 MW to 1 GW of solar energy and battery storage, and saving 1.6 to 1.8 GW by implementing energy efficiency measures. Related to the increase in capacity of the company’s power mix, Hydro-Québec also expects to ensure the reliability of the electric grid and to increase its reach by adding 5,000 km of new transmission lines to which it expects to make an investment of CAD50bn (US$36bn) by 2035.

In December 2022, Hydro-Québec announced a procurement strategy with a new mechanism targeting the development of over 4 GW of wind power in suitable areas in Canada by 2030. In March 2023, Hydro-Québec also accepted seven bids totalling 1,303 MW of renewable energy capacity, of which 1,144 MW of wind power, under two calls for tenders.
