Hydro-Québec partners to develop 1 GW wind power project in Quebec (Canada)

The Canadian utility Hydro-Québec and the Alliance de l’énergie de l’Est (Eastern Energy Alliance) have signed a partnership agreement for the development of 1 GW of wind energy capacity in the southwestern Bas-Saint-Laurent region in the Canadian province of Quebec. The partnership aims to develop a 700 km2 area, with an estimated investment of about CAD3bn (US$2.2). Once the project receives all the relevant approvals, the partners consider to use a competitive bidding process to welcome a developer into the partnership who will provide the technical expertise necessary for the completion of the subsequent phases, with the development of the projects being coordinated with the evolution of the electricity transmission system.

The 50:50 partnership is part of Hydro-Québec's Wind Energy Development Strategy, and it is expected to add on the company’s goal of achieving 10 GW of wind capacity by 2035. At the end of 2023, Canada had a total installed capacity of 160 GW, of which wind capacity represented about 11% (17 GW).
