Hungary inaugurates a 250 MW solar power plant in Mezőcsát

The Government of Hungary has inaugurated a 250 MW solar power plant in the municipality of Mezőcsát, in the county of Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén (northern Hungary). The solar plant, which will be able to produce 372 GWh/year of clean electricity, is currently the largest in operation in the country. The development of the Mezőcsát power plant, which comprises 466,000 solar panels spread over 440 hectares, required a total investment of HUF90bn (€244m). The commissioning of the solar plant is expected to reduce Hungary’s emissions by 130 ktCO2/year.

As of end-2021, solar represented about 15% of Hungary’s installed capacity with 1.55 GW and 11% of its power generation with 3.8 TWh. The country currently has more than 900 MW of solar capacity under construction or under development. In 2022, the Hungarian Government announced its intention de reach 14 GW of installed solar capacity by 2030.
