Horizon Nuclear Power, the UK nuclear project developer owned by Hitachi, has officially withdrawn its application for planning consent for its Wylfa Newydd nuclear power plant project on the island of Anglesey, in North Wales (United Kingdom). In September 2020, Hitachi officially withdrew from the project, citing rising costs and worsening investment climate. The company was in discussions with third parties that could replace Hitachi in the project but no definitive proposal was announced, prompting Hitachi to draw a line under the project.
The project would have comprised two Advanced Boiling Water Reactors (ABWRs) with a combined capacity of 2,760 MWe on the site of the former 980 MWe Wylfa nuclear power plant. The company has been unable to reach a financing agreement with the UK government and stopped the project for economic reasons in January 2019. In August 2020, Hitachi tried to revive the project, without success.
