Horisont Energi selects site for its 4 to 8 MtCO2/year CCS project in Norway

The Norwegian energy company Horisont Energi has selected a site in Gismarvik, Rogaland County, on the southwest coast of Norway, to build its Errai large-scale Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) project, which will be able to store between 4 and 8 MtCO2/year, with the possibility of storing more in later phases of the project.

The company entered into an option agreement with the Haugaland Næringspark industrial to locate the project. The terminal will receive CO2 from both European and Norwegian customers, including from the planned CO2 terminal in the Port of Rotterdam (Netherlands). From the terminal, carbon will be transported through a pipeline to the North Sea, where it would be injected and stored in an offshore reservoir.

The award of a license for the project is expected to be announced during the first half of 2023, and the start of operations is expected by 2026. The Errai CCS project is being developed by Horisont Energi and Neptune Energy and is the first commercial CO2 storage project in Norway. In November 2022, they signed an agreement with the German energy group E.ON to store more than 1 MtCO2/year in Errai.
