Honduras's new NDC targets 9.6% cut in GHG emissions by 2030 compared to BAU

The Honduran Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment has published the second update of the Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) for the period from 2021 to 2030. The NDC update maintains the goal of reducing emissions by 16% from the 2030 forecast (28.94 MtCO2eq), in relation to the energy (9%), agriculture (5%), industrial processes and product use (1%), and waste (1%) sectors. This 16% target corresponds to a 4.6 MtCO2eq reduction compared to the BAU scenario.

In this update, Honduras introduces a new Business-As-Usual (BAU) scenario of 50.38 MtCO2-eq, including a new target for its land use, land-use change, and forestry (LULUCF) sector, which was not covered in the previous NDC, seeking to cut its emissions by 1%, conditional to international financing. By 2030, Honduras plans to reduce emissions by 4.84 MtCO2-eq (9.6% cut compared to the BAU scenario), conditional on sufficient climate financing under the Paris Agreement.

The Second Update of the Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) is presented by Honduras in compliance with the Paris Agreement and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
