Holtec International has unveiled plans to develop a 1.36 GW SMR project at the former Oyster Creek nuclear power plant site in New Jersey, following approval by the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) of the site's License Termination Plan, a key milestone in the decommissioning process (Holtec press release, 30/07/2026).
The proposed project would comprise four SMR-300 units with a combined capacity of 1.36 GW, more than twice the capacity of the former 636 MW Oyster Creek reactor, which ceased operations in 2018 after nearly 49 years of service. Holtec is targeting commercial operation in 2036, subject to regulatory approvals, financing arrangements and power purchase agreements.
The company said recent pro-nuclear legislation in New Jersey has improved conditions for advanced nuclear development at the site.
The Oyster Creek project forms part of Holtec’s broader SMR-300 deployment strategy, which also includes the proposed Palisades project in Michigan and potential developments at former nuclear sites including Pilgrim in Massachusetts and Indian Point in New York.
