Hitachi and Exelon join forces on Wylfa nuclear project in the UK

Horizon Nuclear Power, the British subsidiary of Japanese grouop Hitachi, and US energy utility Exelon Generation have formed an operating partnership to advance Horizon’s expertise to operate a next generation nuclear power plant at Wylfa Newydd on Anglesey, North Wales (United Kingdom).

Horizon Nuclear Power plans to invest £19bn (€23bn or US$24bn) in the construction of the Wylfa Newydd nuclear project. The project would consist of up to four Advanced Boiling Water Reactors (ABWRs) with a combined capacity of around 5,400 MW on the site of the former 980 MW Wylfa nuclear power plant.

Exelon Generation operates the largest fleet of nuclear plants in the United States, with 19,460 MW from 22 reactors at 13 facilities in Illinois,

Pennsylvania, New York, Maryland and New Jersey. Eight nuclear plants are boiling water reactors. The ABWRs to be installed at Wylfa Newydd represent the next generation of reactor technology.
