Hindustan Petroleum commissions a 5 Mt/year LNG terminal in Gujarat (India)

India’s Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL), a subsidiary of the state-owned Oil & Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC), has commissioned its 5 Mt/year Chhara LNG regasification terminal, located in India’s Gujarat State, following the receiving of the terminal’s commissioning LNG cargo. The cargo was delivered onboard the LNG carrier Maran Gas Coronis, which was berthed at the greenfield LNG storage and regasification terminal in Chhara in early January 2025.

The LNG terminal boasts a 5 Mt/year capacity, expandable to 10 Mt/year with its second phase. Approximately INR47.5bn (US$550m) has been invested in the development of the project. The unloading facility can cater to LNG carriers with an 80,000 m3 to 266,000 m3 capacity. A 1.2 km-long jetty with unloading arms and a pipeline for transporting LNG to storage tanks is being built for this purpose. Furthermore, the terminal’s Phase 2 envisages the construction of an additional jetty.
