The Romanian power utility Hidroelectrica plans to develop a 300 MW solar PV and green hydrogen project in the county of Brasov (central Romania), on the site of an abandoned hydropower project on the Olt River, dating from Romania’s communist period. The energy produced will power Romanian consumers and be used to power a green hydrogen production plant, which is expected to have a production capacity of 15,000 t/year, with an electrolysis capacity of 100 MW. Hidroelectrica has launched a contract notice to tender the feasibility study and specifications of the project, estimated at RON12.3m (€2.5m), with bids that can be submitted before 1 March 2023.
Solar accounts for 7% of Romania’s power capacity mix, with 1.4 GW (2021). Around 3.5 GW of solar projects are currently under development in the country.
