The Swedish energy company Hexicon and the Netherlands-based IX Wind have formed a partnership to provide services for the development and construction of a 1,300+ MW floating offshore wind project off the coast of Taiwan. The partnership, first secured in December 2022, will offer project management, consultancy and engineering services to the project, which is expected to be commissioned by 2028 at the earliest.
Hexicon operates in Europe, Africa, Asia, and North America, and has a 17 GW project portfolio, while IX Wind, part of the IX Renewables group, has been active in Taiwan since 2012 and contributed to the completion of the country's first offshore wind project, the 128 MW Formosa 1 wind park.
At the end of 2021, offshore wind represented less than 1% of Taiwan’s installed capacity (with 237 MW), as the island installed its first offshore wind turbine in 2017. Currently, Taiwan has nearly 3 GW of wind projects under construction and over 22 GW under development.
