The Croatian power utility Hrvatska elektroprivreda (HEP) is planning to develop a 498 MW pumped-storage hydropower project in Sinjsko Polje, near the city of Split in the Dalmatia region (southern Croatia). The Blaca pumped-storage hydropower plant is expected to feature three generators and includes the construction of a dam. Its ouput is expected to reach 986 GWh/year once completed.
The Croatian Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development of Croatia is currently assessing the environmental impact of the project, estimated at €790m. HEP submitted the project via its HEP-Proizvodnja electricity production subsidiary.
As of end 2022, hydro represented 44% of Croatia’s installed capacity with 2.2 GW (40% at the end of 2023) and 39% of its power generation with 5.6 TWh. The country currently has 446 MW of hydro capacity under construction and 1.9 GW under development.
