Helen (Finland) will close a 212 MW coal-fired power plant in 2023

The Finnish energy group Helen (owned by the City of Helsinki) has decided to bring forward the closure of the 212 MW Hanasaari coal-fired power plant from the end of 2024 to April 2023. The power plant, commissioned in 1974, will be put into reserve operation for the heating season 2022–2023, when the bioheat plant to be built in Vuosaari will start operations using biomass, heat pumps, and heat storage. Hanasaari is the third largest source of industrial CO2 emissions in Finland and accounts for 2% of the country's total CO2 emissions. Its closure will help Helen reach carbon neutrality by 2035.

In March 2019, the Finnish parliament approved a government proposal to phase out coal-fired power generation as of 1 May 2029, with the aim of becoming carbon neutral by 2035. Coal accounts for around 22% of Finland’s installed capacity, with 4.2 GW (end 2020).
