HEH starts construction of the 13.3 bcm/year Stade LNG terminal (Germany)

The German company Hanseatic Energy Hub (HEH) has announced the start of construction of the 13.3 bcm/year Stade LNG import terminal, located in north-western Germany. The terminal, which will be Germany's first land-based LNG terminal, is scheduled for completion in 2027. Around €1bn will be invested in the construction of the project. HEH took a final investment decision for the project in March 2024.

Once the HEH land-based terminal enters into service, the floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) ‘Energos Force’ chartered by Germany’s federal government will set sail from Stade. The 5 bcm/year floating LNG terminal, which has been on site since March 2024, will continue to secure the gas supply in the short term until the more efficient land-based terminal is completed.

Germany has LNG terminals in Wilhelmshaven, Lubmin, Brunsbüttel, as well as in Mukran, which received its first FSRU, ‘Energos Power’, in early 2024. In 2023, LNG terminals accounted for about 7% of total German gas imports.
