HEH begins construction of the 13 bcm/year Stade LNG terminal in Germany

The German infrastructure company Hanseatic Energy Hub (HEH) has announced the start of construction for Germany’s Stade LNG import terminal, located on the Elbe River near Hamburg and expected to reach a total regasification capacity of 13.3 bcm/year.

The construction of the terminal, originally planned to start in 2026, has begun ahead of schedule after the authorities approved the project’s preparatory measures. Thus, the Stade LNG project has become one of several FSRU projects in Germany that are expected to be commissioned and deliver gas to the German market before the end of 2023.

From 2026, the facility will be repurposed as an onshore LNG landing port operated by HEH. Germany's federal government and the state administration for Saxony have each pledged €100m to finance Stade LNG's development.

Earlier in September 2022, Deutsche ReGas began construction of a 4.5 bcm/year LNG terminal in Lubmin, northeastern Germany.
