HD Renewable Energy (HDRE) has partnered with Tokyo Gas for the management of a 340 MW BESS portfolio across Japan (HD Renewable Energy press release, 16/04/2026).
The partnership consists of operational service agreements and long-term offtake arrangements of the BESS projects. Operational service projects constitute about 149 MW of projects in the Aomori Prefecture awarded under Japan's Long-Term Decarbonization Auction (LTDA) scheme, where HDRE should be responsible for development and construction while Tokyo Gas will oversee operations upon commissioning (scheduled for 2029). Under the long-term offtake framework, Tokio Gas should obtain operational usage rights for a portfolio of 190 MW of BESS projects located in Miyazaki, Iwate, Miyagi, and Fukushima and pay usage fees over a period of approximately 20 years.
The partnership is part of HDRE’s planned expansion in Japan, where the company has a development pipeline of approximately 3 GW and has secured 400 MW under Japan’s LTDA scheme. The company has recently commissioned a 50 MW BESS project in Hokkaido.
