Half of Coal India's ongoing coal projects suffering delays (India)

Indian coal mining group Coal India has announced delays in 62 coal projects, out of 120 ongoing projects, due to delays in forest clearances (34 projects), land acquisitions and rehabilitation and resettlement (R&R) related issues (17). Coal India also announced delays in 27 of 71 non-mining projects. In addition, seven projects have been hit by delays or discontinuance of work or non-participation in tender by contractor.



In 2016-2017, ONGC completed seven coal projects with a total capacity of 24.2 Mt/year and completion costs of Rs 1,191 crore (US$186m).

The group also sanctioned eight coal mining projects with a cumulative capacity of 56.25 Mt/year and a total investment of Rs 8,931 crore (US$1.4bn). Its subsidiaries also sanctioned 11 coal mining projects with a cumulative capacity of 16.74 Mt/year and a total investment of Rs 3,427 crore (US$535m).



ONGC, which operates through 82 mining areas in eight provincial states of India, has 394 mines (as on April 1, 2017) of which 193 are underground, 177 opencast and 24 mixed mines.
