H2 Energy Europe, a Swiss builder of hydrogen ecosystems in Europe, has received environmental approval for its 1 GW green hydrogen production facility at Veldbæk in Esbjerg (Denmark), and for a 400 kV underground cable to the transformer station in Endrup. This environmental approval by the Esbjerg Municipality and the Danish Environmental Protection Agency brings the project closer to a Final Investment Decision (FID). Deployment of the technology at H2 Energy’s complex is expected in 2024, with production of green hydrogen starting in 2025.
The Power-to-X plant includes an electrolysis plant with a total capacity of 1 GW in Veldbæk to produce hydrogen by using renewable energy and is expected to produce 18 t/h (90 kt/year) of hydrogen. According to H2 Energy Europe, the green hydrogen project should support the decarbonization of heavy industries and road transportation, contributing to a reduction in CO2 emissions from the transport sector of 1.1 Mt/year. It will also serve as chemical feedstock to produce sustainable e-fuels like methanol and ammonia, advancing Europe’s green transition.
In March 2022, Denmark unveiled its new hydrogen strategy with plans to reach 4 to 6 GW of electrolysis capacity by 2030.
