Guinea and Mali launch a 225 kV power interconnection project

The 225 kV Guinea-Mali electricity interconnection project has been launched. Once built, it will spread across 714 km, of which 590 km in Guinea and 124 km in Mali. The project involves the construction of a double-circuit line and associated transformer substations between the town of N'zérékoré in Guinea and Sanankoroba (Bamako) in Mali. The interconnection line will be built as part of the West African Power Pool (WAPP) investment programme and will be connected to other 225-kV lines being constructed in the region, namely the OMVG, CLSG and OMVS lines). The project will be implemented over a five-year period (2018-2021).

The US$420m project will be jointly financed by the World Bank, the African Development Bank, the Islamic Development Bank, the CEDEAO Investment Bank, the West African Development Bank and both governments. The project's beneficiaries are the future customers of the two national power companies, namely: Energie du Mali (EDM) and Electricité de Guinée (EDG).
