GRTgaz (France) plans new gas interconnection point with Switzerland

French gas transmission system operator GRTgaz has announced the creation of a new gas interconnection point between France and Switzerland; the bidirectional point will be created at Oltingue (Haut-Rhin, France) and will enable to exchange gas with Switzerland and Italy indirectly as of 2018.

The new gas interconnection point will raise gas transfer capacities (France can already export 220 GWh/d of gas to Switzerland): as of 2018, France will be able to import 100 GWh/d of gas from Italy through Switzerland and the capacity could be doubled later. France will benefit from an increased access to gas from Azerbaijan (TAP gas pipeline project from Azerbaijan to Italy), Algeria and Libya.
