GRIDCo starts a 330 kV power line linking central to northern Ghana

The Ghana grid company GRIDCo has commissioned the 330 kV Kumasi to Bolgatanga transmission line project in Ghana, which consisted in the construction of approximately 550 km of 330 kV transmission line from Kumasi (center) to Bolgatanga (north), as well as the construction of 330 kV substations in Kumasi, Kintampo, Tamale and Bolgatanga and the expansion of the existing 161 kV substations at these locations.

The project, which is part of the West Africa Power Pool (WAPP) project, seeks to reinforce the Ghana transmission system, and ensure the export of at least 100 MW of electricity to Burkina Faso, as well as increase the reliability of the Ghana to Burkina interconnection project. The French Development Agency (AFD) financed the line at a total cost of US$174m.

Ghana, which sells electricity to Benin/Togo, Burkina Faso and Mali, is a net power exporter, with 1.7 TWh in 2020. Ghanaian power generation reached 19 TWh in 2020 (+11%/year since 2011), with 58% of hydro, 38% of gas and 4% of oil.
