The Spanish renewables developer Grenergy has started to build the Atacama Oasis project, a 1 GW solar power plant combined with a 4.1 GWh energy storage facility, to be installed in Chile’s Atacama Desert. The US$1.4bn project is going to be developed in five phases to be commissioned over the next 36 months. Grenergy has already signed agreements to supply more than 8 TWh of green energy in a 15-year PPA with a subsidiary of COPEC, one of the main fuel distribution companies in Chile. The storage facility is set to be the world’s largest facility behind the Moss Landing Energy Storage Facility in California, United States (3 GWh), although the type of storage that will be used for it has not yet been specified.
Grenergy, founded in 2007, plans to invest €2.6bn globally through 2026, aiming to install 5 GW of solar capacity along with 4.1 GWh in energy storage capacity. So far, the company has a 15.5 GW portfolio in various stages of development and has successfully sold a total of 1.1 GW.
