Grenergy Renovables has submitted environmental documentation for the Parque Fotovoltaico Antofagasta 1 hybrid solar and storage project in Chile's Antofagasta region, seeking approval for a development combining 517 MW of solar PV capacity and a 430 MW/3 GWh BESS with a seven-hour discharge duration (Bnamericas press release, 28/08/2026).
The USD520m project, located in the municipality of María Elena, is planned to be connected to Chile's national grid through a new 33/220 kV Salitre substation and a 21 km transmission line linking the facility to the 220 kV Kimal substation. Construction is scheduled to begin in May 2028, subject to environmental approval, with commercial operation targeted for February 2030.
The facility is designed to operate for 40 years and intends to allow solar generation to be shifted to periods of higher electricity demand. The project intends to strengthen Grenergy's growing solar and storage portfolio in Chile, where the company is also developing the multi-phase Oasis Atacama project comprising 2.5 GW of solar PV and 14 GWh of energy storage.
As of 2025, Chile had over 26 GW of installed renewable capacity (not including 2.8 GW of biomass and waste), representing nearly 65% of its total installed capacity (Enerdata’s Global Energy & CO2 data).
