GreenIT, the Italian renewable energy joint venture between Plenitude (Eni) and CDP Equity, and Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) have signed an agreement to develop three floating offshore wind projects totalling 2 GW in the Italian regions of Latium and Sardinia.
The agreement involves a 540 MW wind project off the coast of Civitavecchia in Latium, and two other wind projects located off the coast of Olbia (Sardinia), with a power of 500 MW and 1,000 MW. The three projects are expected to produce around 5 TWh/year with commercial operation expected to begin between 2028 and 2031, pending the necessary authorisations.
With these new projects, the partnership’s offshore wind portfolio in Italy will reach nearly 3 GW, with an expected production of around 7 TWh/year of renewable energy, enough to satisfy the electricity consumption of around 2.5 million Italian households.
Italy is aiming to cover 55% of its total electricity consumption with renewables by 2030. As of end-2021, Italy did not yet possess any operational offshore wind capacity but had more than 11 GW of onshore wind (9% of the country’s installed capacity and 7% of its power generation with 21 TWh).
