Greenalia's 250 MW floating wind projects move ahead in the Canary Islands (Spain)

The Spanish renewable company Greenalia is discussing with the government of the Canary Islands (Spain) on the development of five 50 MW floating offshore wind projects with a combined capacity of 250 MW in the Canary Islands. The projects, named Gofio, Dunas, Mojo, Guanche and Cardón, would be developed off the south-eastern coast of Gran Canaria, between Castillo del Romeral and Arinaga. Gofio could be the first floating offshore wind park in Spain, generating enough to supply 75,000 households. This project would require between €175m and €200m in investment and the total investment for the five projects should range between €800m and €950m.

The Canary Island targets 310 MW of offshore wind capacity by 2025, as set out in the Canary Islands 2015-2025 Strategic Energy Plan (EECan25). Iberdrola is developing the 238 MW San Borondón floating wind project off the southeast coast of the Gran Canaria Island, while Ocean Winds is promoting four 50 MW floating wind projects (Alisio, Cabildo, Sahariano and Colombino), along with a 144 MW project. Finally, Enerocean is developing the Canarray I and II projects (180 MW).
