Greece will end lignite-fired generation in 2025 instead of 2028

The Greek state-owned power utility Public Power Corporation (PPC) has decided to invest €250m to switch its 600 MW Ptolemaida 5 lignite-fired project in Kozani, Western Macedonia (northern Greece) to gas and to raise its installed capacity to 1,000 MW. The lignite-fired power project, which is currently under construction, was expected to operate until 2028. It will now be converted to gas as of 2025.

PPC (51% state-owned) has pledged to close all of Greece’s other existing lignite plants by 2023. The company currently operates four lignite-fired plants: Agios Dimitrios (5 units, 1,585 MW), Kardia (2 units, 650 MW), Melitis (one unit, 330 MW) and Megalopolis (2 units, 600 MW).

In 2019, coal accounted for 17% of Greece’s installed capacity, with 3.3 GW and around a quarter of the power mix. In 2020, the coal-fired power capacity declined by 600 MW to 2.7 GW.
