ICGB, the operator of the Gas Interconnector Greece-Bulgaria (IGB), has signed an interconnection agreement with Greece’s natural gas transmission system operator (TSO) DESFA to connect to the Komotini interconnection point (IP) in Greece. The agreement sets out all the requirements and conditions to govern all operations at Komotini. The agreement is key to ensure the transportation of natural gas volumes coming after the commercial launch of the LNG terminal in Alexandroupolis. In the monthly capacity auction for October 2024, ICGB has offered available capacity of 48 GWh/day at the IP.
In 2022, the 3 bcm/year Interconnection Greece-Bulgaria (IGB) entered commercial operations, connecting Bulgaria to the Revythoussa LNG terminal in Greece and to the Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP). Bulgaria, which is already using the Revithoussa LNG terminal in Greece, is seeking to secure LNG imports to replace Russian gas supplies. In 2022, Bulgaria reached an agreement in principle to double its reserved capacity to 1 bcm/year at the new 5.5 bcm/year Alexandroupolis LNG terminal (north-eastern Greece). The IGB pipeline could be expanded to 5 bcm/year.
