Greece awards contract for its 1 GW Corinth–Kos power interconnection

The Greek power transmission system operator (TSO) IPTO has awarded a turnkey contract to Hellenic Cables, through its wholly owned subsidiary Fulgor, for the engineering, procurement, construction and installation (EPCI) of the 320 kV Corinth-Kos HVDC interconnection in Greece (Hellenic Cables press release, 13/08/2026).

The EUR1.5bn project is planned to comprise approximately 1,260 km of submarine cables and 30 km of underground cables, providing a total transmission capacity of 1 GW. Hellenic Cables intends to manufacture the HVDC cables at its facilities in Corinth and Thiva. Construction is expected to begin in the fourth quarter of 2026, with project completion scheduled for 2030.

The Corinth-Kos interconnection is designed to connect the Dodecanese islands to Greece's mainland transmission system, enabling the gradual retirement of oil-fired power plants on the islands while strengthening security and reliability of electricity supply. The contract signing remains subject to customary statutory approvals.

The award comes shortly after Hellenic Cables achieved certification for 525 kV HVDC cable systems, a milestone that strengthened its position in the market for large-scale electricity interconnection projects.
