Greece approves a 4.3 bcm/year LNG import project in Corinth

The government has approved after a fast-track process the construction of a 4.3 bcm/year floating gas and regasification unit (FSRU) off Corinth. The Greek refiner Motor Oil Hellas is developing the €340m project, located near its oil refinery in Corinth, at about 70 km away from Athens. The floating LNG import terminal, expected to be operational by 2025, will have a maximum storage capacity of up to 210,000 cm of gas, which will be either regasified and exported through Greece’s gas grid or sold as LNG via vessels and trucks.

The Revithoussa LNG terminal (7.2 bcm/year) is currently the only LNG terminal in Greece. The plant is operated by DEPA, a state-owned natural gas group. Greece imported 13 bcm of natural gas in 2021 (x2.2 compared to 2020), including 2.2 bcm of LNG.
