Google signs deal with Brookfield to procure 3 GW of hydro power (US)

Brookfield Asset Management together with Brookfield Renewable and Google have signed a Hydro Framework Agreement (HFA) to deliver up to 3 GW of hydropower capacity across the United States. According to the agreement, Google will be able to procure carbon-free electricity from up to 3 GW of hydropower assets that will be relicensed, overhauled, or upgraded to extend their useful life and continue adding power to the grid.

Hydropower facilities in Pennsylvania currently undergoing relicensing by Brookfield will be the first contracted assets under 20-year Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs), namely the Holtwood and Safe Harbor hydropower plants (670 MW). They will support Google’s operations across the mid-Atlantic market (PJM), with the companies also expecting to focus on the mid-continent (MISO) electricity market, with the flexibility to expand into other US regions eventually.

The partnership is aligned with Google’s ambition to power its operations with 24/7 carbon-free energy.
