GNA gets green light for a 1.7 GW thermal plant in Porto do Açu (Brazil)

Gás Natural Açu (GNA), the joint venture of Prumo Logística, BP and Siemens, has obtained an installation licence from the Brazilian Environmental Agency to build a 1.7 GW gas-fired power plant, named GNA II in Porto do Açu, in São João da Barra, in northern Rio de Janeiro. The construction is expected to start before mid-2020.

The Açu Gas Hub will consist of an LNG regasification terminal that will supply gas to two CCGT power plants, the 1.3 GW LNG-to-Power project GNA I worth BRL4.5bn (U$1.1bn), which is under construction and expected to be commissioned and 2021, and the 1.7 GW GNA II project. When fully operational, the GNA power plants are expected to add 3 GW of power capacity, accounting for 17% of Brazil's gas-fired power generation. In addition, the joint venture has obtained an environmental licence to double its installed capacity, which could attain 6.4 GW.
