Globeleq breaks ground on 250 MW solar+150 MW/600 MWh BESS project (Zambia)

The African independent power producer (IPP) Globeleq has launched construction of its Leopards Hill Solar and Battery Project, which combines a 250 MW solar plant with a 150 MW/600 MWh BESS, in the Chongwe district of Zambia. The USD315m project has signed a Grid Connection Agreement (GCA) with ZESCO, securing export capacity and reinforcing collaboration with Zambia’s national grid operator. Financial close is targeted for the end of 2026.

The solar+storage project aims to diversify Zambia's energy mix and strengthen national grid stability. It will support Zambia’s ambition to reach 10 GW of installed generation capacity by 2030 and 3 Mt/year of copper production. Hydropower currently accounts for 80% of national electricity generation, with the remainder covered by coal and oil.
