Gingerah Energy plans a 1 GW data centre with 6.7 GW of wind-solar in Australia

Gingerah Energy has submitted its Project Meridien, an off-grid data centre and renewable energy hub for evaluation under Australia’s EPBC Act (Australian government press release, 21/10/2026). The proposed project is in the Kimberley region in Western Australia, and it plans the installation of approximately 5.2 GW of solar, 1.5 GW of wind, and 5 GWh of BESS to power a 1 GW data centre. The project also plans to add firming dispatchable capacity to support the cold-water energy storage for the data centre, although no further details were revealed about the type of technology that could be used.

According to the CEO of Gingerah Energy, the project is expected to supply 85% of its energy needs from wind and solar, while gas could cover the remaining 15% (Renew Economy, 22/10/2026). Power would flow through an internal microgrid, with no connection to an external grid.

The data centre is proposed for development in stages (48 MW, 120 MW, 240 MW, 620 MW and 1,000 MW), with the first stages (up until 240 MW) planned for progressive construction and commissioning over two to three years. A final investment decision on the initial phase is targeted for 2029, with construction starting in 2029 and progressive commissioning in 2030-2032. Full build-out is targeted by 2038.
