GIGA Storage has reached financial close for the 350 MW/1.4 GWh Albatross BESS project in Lower Saxony, Germany (GIGA Storage press release, 26/10/2026). Financial close on EUR260m of debt financing from a seven-bank consortium should allow for construction works to start early 2027 and operation in early 2029.
CATL is responsible for engineering, construction and maintenance, with several European subcontractors. Permits, land contracts and supplier contracts were finalised before financial close. The project connects directly to Amprion’s 380 kV grid at the adjacent Merzen substation, under the grid connection agreement signed on 14 October 2026.
GIGA Storage now has about 1.4 GW/5.6 GWh of projects under construction in three countries: Albatross, Leopard (300 MW) in the Netherlands, due online in 2027, and Green Turtle (700 MW) in Belgium.
