GHG emissions in Australia dipped by 0.9% in 2019

According to the Australian Department of Industry, Science, Energy and Resources, Australia's greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions dipped by 0.9% in 2019 (-5 MtCO2eq) to 532.5 MtCO2eq.

GHG emissions from the power sector declined by 2.9% (-5.3 MtCO2eq) as rising wind and solar generation contributed to cut coal-fired power generation but still accounted for a third of total GHG emissions in Australia. In addition, emissions from the agricultural sector decreased by 5.8% (-4.2%) due to the effects of the 2019 drought. However, emissions from export industries rose by 3% (+6.1 MtCO2), spurred by rising LNG exports (+11%), and accounted for nearly 40% of Australia's total GHG emissions.

In 2019, Australia's GHG emissions stood 13.7% below their 2005 level  (the baseline year for the Paris Agreement). The country has committed to reduce its emissions by 26-28% by 2030 from 2005 levels.
