Ghana commissions 450 MW Karpowership gas-fired floating plant

The government of Ghana has officially commissioned the 450 MW gas-fired Powership Osman Khan, supplied by Turkish company Karpowership, anchored in Sekondi (western Ghana). The floating power plant, which was previously stationed in Tema (eastern Ghana) since 2015, was consuming heavy fuel oil (HFO). The barge is now mainly supplied with natural gas from the Sankofa gas (Offshore Cape Three Points project).

In June 2014, state-owned Electricity Company of Ghana signed a contract with Karpowership to deploy a powership for a period of 10 years. According to the government, the switch of the Karpowership to natural gas could allow Ghana to save US$480m/year in take-or-pay cost. In Ghana, the share of natural gas in the power generation mix has risen from 22% in 2016 to 63% in 2018.

Karpowership, which is a subsidiary of Karadeniz Holding, operates 22 floating power plants in more than 10 countries around the world. It plans to add 20 more energy ships with a total capacity of 5,000 MW in the next five years and is in the process of negotiating and bidding with 15 other countries in Africa, Asia, and Latin America.
