Ghana announces plans for a 1.2 GW gas-fired power project

Ghana's President has announced plans to construct a 1.2 GW gas-fired power plant, amid rising demand and recent power outages. The government expects to break ground on the project before the end of 2026, following the completion of technical designs and a project roadmap by the Ministry of Energy and the Ministry of Finance. The project aligns with the country’s ongoing efforts to utilise domestic gas resources.

According to the President, the country's average power demand increased from about 3.5 GW in 2017 to around 4.3 GW. The additional capacity would allow Ghana to export surplus power to neighbouring countries, particularly Burkina Faso. Ghana already exports electricity intermittently to countries including Togo, Benin and Burkina Faso.
