Ghana plans to increase its total installed capacity by 75% by 2016, from 2,845 MW in 2013 to 5,000 MW. The West African country is struggling to meet power demand and bets on gas reserves from the offshore Jubilee field to boost power generation. Ghana aims to resolve within weeks a court order that blocked the construction of a gas plant and of a gas pipeline from Jubilee to the land and to commission the pipeline by the end of 2014. The completion of the gas project is expected to boost power supply and to curb spendings on light crude oil import for thermal power generation.
So far, nearly 9 GW of power projects have been proposed in Ghana, including 3.8 GW of gas projects. Two CCGT and gas turbines projects of 340 MW and 220 MW are expected in Kpone in 2015 and should be followed by a 360 MW CCGT project developed by Sunon Asogli in 2016 and a 450 MW CCGT plant at Domunli by the Volta River Authority. In addition, Endeavour Energy announced the development of 1,000 MW CCGT capacities between 2017 and 2019.
