Germany's power production declined by 12% in 2023

The German Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) has published the electricity generation statistics for 2023, announcing that power porduction declined by 12% in 2023, driven down by lower demand as a result of the economic slowdown in energy-intensive industries and the increased import of electricity. Conventionnal production declined by 28% to 198 TWh, with coal-fired generation decreasing by  31% to 117 TWh. Gas-fired generation increased by 4% to 61 TWh. In contrast, renewable production rose by 7% to 252 TWh, mainly driven up by wind (+14% to 139 TWh). Solar generation declined by 1% to 54 TWh. Imports rose by 41% to 69 TWh, with the ratio of electricity imports to generation reaching 15% in 2023.

In total, the share of renewable in the German power mix increased from 46% in 2022 to 56% in 2023, while the share of conventionnal energy sources declined from 54% to 44%. Wind accounted for 31% of total generation in 2023 (compared to 24% in 2022), followed by coal (26% in 2023, compared to 33% in 2022), natural gas (14% in 2023, compared to 12% in 2022) and solar (12% in 2023, compared to 11% in 2022).
