Germany’s power generation fell by 4% in 2024, 59% came from renewables

According to preliminary data from the German Federal Network Agency (Bundesnetzagentur), about 432 TWh of electricity was generated in Germany in 2024, a nearly 4% decrease compared to 2023. The total generation also includes exported electricity volumes.

Renewable energy sources accounted for 255 TWh, i.e., 59% of total generation (compared to 56% in 2023). A total of 26 TWh was accounted for by offshore wind and 112 TWh by onshore wind, followed by solar PV systems (63 TWh), and biomass (36 TWh). Thermal generation stood at 177 TWh in 2024, i.e., 11% less than in 2023, due to a 31% fall in coal-fired power generation and a 9% decrease in lignite-fired power generation; this was partly offset by a 9% hike in gas-fired power generation, to 13% of the power mix.

In addition, the average wholesale electricity price in the day-ahead market was €78.51/MWh in 2024 (-17.5% compared to the previous year). In commercial foreign trade, Germany imported a total of 67 TWh (+23%) and exported 35 TWh (-10%).
