Germany's PNE signs deal to produce e-fuels in South Africa with 1 GW of renewables

PNE, a German wind developer, has signed a declaration of intent with SET, a German energy trader, to jointly produce and market synthetic fuels from renewable energies (e-fuels) in South Africa. The proposed e-fuel facility, located on the west coast of South Africa, is expected to have a production capacity of 500,000 t/year of e-fuels, obtained from green hydrogen produced via electrolysis. An electrolyser with a nominal output of 1 GW will be powered by wind and solar PV plants. Since the project site does not have a large grid capacity, the decision was made to produce e-fuels from wind and solar and not to supply the electrolyser via the national grid. The water required for electrolysis will come from the sea and runs through a desalination plant before it is used. Partners have not disclosed the timeline and the cost of the project.
