German transmission system operators have announced that entry and exit capacities of almost 6 GW have been reserved on a paid basis across the country’s hydrogen core network (German transmission system operators, 31/07/2026). The volume is around twice that reported in the previous market update of 13 May. A further 0.6 GW has been reserved for inter-cluster transmission, while requests for an additional 0.5 GW are currently being evaluated.
Germany plans to develop a 9,700 km hydrogen core network between 2025 and 2027, based on both repurposed natural gas pipelines and new-build infrastructure. The network is designed to connect hydrogen supply and demand centres nationwide.
The network is scheduled to be commissioned progressively between 2025 and 2032. Once completed, it is expected to provide around 100 GW of hydrogen injection capacity and 87 GW of offtake capacity.
