The German Federal Network Agency (Bundesnetzagentur) has presented a plan for the expansion of Germany’s power grid, in which the agency wants to double the already completed procedures from 440 km of high-voltage lines to 900 km by the end of 2023. The Bundesnetzagentur also aims for 2,800 km of transmission lines to be approved by the end of 2024 and 4,400 km by the end of 2025.
The expansion of transmission capacity should connect wind power production centres in the north of the country to industrial consumers in the south and west of Germany. Although grid expansion is the responsibility of Germany’s federal states, the central government has also launched a national framework for smart grids (Act on the digitisation of the energy transition), which came into force at the end of May 2023.
Out of a total network expansion requirement of around 14,000 km of high-voltage lines, the Federal Network Agency is responsible for approving 7,400 km, mainly projects that run through several federal states.
