Germany’s Brandenburg unveils new solar, wind, emissions reduction targets

The German state of Brandenburg has adopted its Energy Strategy 2040, in which the state notably announced plans to quadruple its solar capacity to 18 GW by 2030 and reach 100% renewable power generation by 2030.

By 2040, the solar capacity across Brandenburg is expected to reach 33 GW (from 4.5 GW in 2021), and the installed wind capacity is set to double to 15 GW (from 7.6 GW in 2021).

In addition, the Energy Strategy 2040 aims to reduce Brandenburg’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 75% by 2030 (compared to 1990 levels) and reach climate neutrality by 2045 at the latest. Primary energy consumption is to be reduced by 39% by 2040 compared to 2007 levels. 82 percent of heat consumption is to be covered by renewable energies by 2040.

The plan for the energy transition also includes the development of a hydrogen economy. The measures will be presented in an upcoming Climate Plan that will be unveiled in the spring of 2023.
