Germany’s Bavaria could take over Uniper’s hydro plants in the region (970 MW)

The state government of Bavaria in Germany intends to take control of all hydropower plants owned by the German energy group Uniper in the region and establish a state-owned operating company. The takeover would involve 97 hydropower plants in Bavaria with a combined capacity of around 970 MW. Uniper was nationalised in December 2022 after suffering significant losses due to the collapse of gas trading between Germany and Russia.

Earlier in August 2023, the group unveiled a new strategy, aiming to invest more than €8bn in renewables to achieve 80% of its installed generating capacity as zero-carbon by 2030. Uniper has an installed capacity of 22.5 GW in Europe (end-2022), including 8.4 GW of gas, 6.2 GW of hard coal, 3.6 GW of hydro, 2.2 GW of renewables, biomass and fuel oil and 1.4 GW of nuclear.
