Ørsted and Nuveen Infrastructure have started commercial operations at the 913 MW Borkum Riffgrund 3 offshore wind plant in the German North Sea (Ørsted press release, 31/08/2026). Located around 72 km off the coast of Lower Saxony, the wind plant comprises 83 Siemens Gamesa 11 MW turbines across 75 km²; it entered construction in late 2023 and is directly connected to TenneT's DolWin Epsilon offshore converter platform. The facility is expected to generate enough renewable electricity to supply more than 900,000 households annually.
The project is backed by long-term corporate power purchase agreements covering 786 MW of capacity ranging from 10 to 25 years and are intended to support the decarbonisation of industrial and technology customers. The agreements include:
- 350 MW with Amazon
- 186 MW with BASF
- 100 MW each with Covestro and Energie-Handels-Gesellschaft/REWE Group
- 50 MW with Google.
Borkum Riffgrund 3 is among Germany's largest operating offshore wind farms and is part of Ørsted's 8 GW offshore wind construction programme. It is the company's sixth operational offshore wind project in Germany, following the 253 MW Gode Wind 3 commissioning in early 2025, and raises Ørsted's installed offshore wind capacity in Germany to around 2.5 GW.
