The German federal government, two Hanseatic cities (Bremen and Hamburg) and four coastal states (Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, Lower Saxony, North Rhine-Westphalia and Schleswig-Holstein) have reached an agreement with the three power transmission system operators (TSOs), namely 50Hertz, Amprion and TenneT to more closely coordinate the necessary steps to connect 30 GW of offshore wind by 2030. This offshore implementation deal update an initial agreements signed in 2020.
In April 2022, the country increased offshore wind targets, with plans to have 30 GW of capacity by 2030, 40 GW by 2035, and at least 70 GW by 2040. Germany’s previous offshore wind objectives were 20 GW by 2030 and 40 GW by 2040. The country has the world’s third largest offshore wind installed capacity, with 7.7 GW at the end of 2021.
